2002 Race Report  |  4x4k Results  |  4x2k Results

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Third Annual relay event! We had a record turn-out with 55 teams completing the course, and the stormy weather stayed away. Special thanks to Natalee Taylor of Mountain FM for doing all the race-day announcing and emceeing.

Top three in the 4 x 4 km event were the Phoenix AA "Phleet Pheet" (with a new course record of 58:59), second was "JJKC", and third was "Sunshine Coast Credit Union - Sechelt". Overall winning team in the 4 x 2 km event was the "Roberts Creek Rebels", second was "The V.P.'s", and third was the "Killer Whales". Winner of the Specialty Subaru Elementary School Challenge was Langdale Elementary with a very impressive 47% participation rate.

2002 Race Report

Sunday, September 29, 2002 -- Record numbers of runners came out for the 3rd annual Specialty Subaru Fall Tune-Up Relay, hosted by local women's singing group Arbutus Sounds Chorus. With 56 teams registered totalling 210 participants, the Relay has grown to become the largest annual running event on the Sunshine Coast, meeting organizer Teresa Nightingale's original goal of 50+ teams. Added to that total were 8-10 little people in the 'round the park "Tot's Trot", ranging in age from 20 months to 5 years.

Much to the relief of the race organizers and participants, an ominous wind warning (up to 70 km/hr) combined with rain in Saturday night's forecast never panned out, as Sunday morning dawned calm and dry. Only a moderate breeze refreshed the runners later in the morning, and the sun even made a strong appearance, keeping the chill off the cool fall day.

At the start line the twenty-team Langdale Elementary squad looked impressive, with most of their first runners wearing the navy blue 2002 Relay T-shirts. At 9:30 am, with a blast of the Mountain FM truck horn the runners sprinted away up the hill beside Dougall Park to begin the 2 km loop course.

Fastest over the 4 x 2 km course were the Roberts Creek Rebels (Connor Richey, Stuart Richey, James Van't Schip, Jonathan Garmulewicz), a youth team (12 & Under) who completed the route in 35:59. Representing Roberts Creek Elementary and coached by George Richey, this foursome gained a 2-minute lead over their nearest competitors. For their efforts they each received a medal and a $25 gift certificate from North Shore Athletics.

Second overall in the 4 x 2 km event were "The V.P.'s", winning gold in the Family category with 2 mother and daughter combinations paired up (Lexa & Kendra Pomfret, Renie & Candice Veale) to form an all-female team who took just 38:02 to cover the 8.36 kilometre distance. Second and third in the Family division were the "Killer Whales" and "Lightning Lussiers", respectively.

In the youth division the silver medals were awarded to a team representing Sechelt's Ecole du Pacific, "L'ecole Raptors", who completed their 4 laps in 43:03 to end up half a minute ahead of bronze-medal winning youth team "Langdale #1" (43:33).

Langdale Elementary outdid themselves this year, entering twenty teams compared to eight in 2001. That's 77 kids and 2 teachers, nearly half of the school population! Handily winning the Specialty Subaru Elementary School Challenge, the students excitedly claimed their trophy and $400 credit for sports equipment. Once again, team coordinators Ann Chow and Norma Hodge are to be commended for setting an example of what a school can do when committed to kid fitness.

Meanwhile, leading the 4 x 4km event was a speedy visiting team from Phoenix Athletics Association in Port Moody, the "Phleet Pheet". With three men and one woman on the team they were competing in the masters men (40+) category. Led by husband and wife team of Paul and Nancy Tinari (2001 and 2002 female winner of the Timex-Asics BC Road Running Series), boosted by elite master Dave Reed, and anchored by another accomplished masters runner Alex Seres, the Phleet Pheet zoomed around the 16.7 km course in a new record of 58:59. In addition to gold medals the foursome also received $200 worth of gift certificates from North Shore Athletics for being first in the longer event.

A few minutes back were defending champions "JJKC" (John Phare, Doug Mulligan, Ken Grunenberg, Carl Green -- should have been renamed "JDKC"!) a local open men's team clocking 1:03:08, a couple of minutes faster than last year's time. A few minutes further back were the Sechelt Sunshine Coast Credit Union masters men team in 1:05:51, consisting of David Barnum, Serge Grenier, Doug Cameron, and Rick Cooney. The "Fall Guys II" open men's team took fourth spot in 1:07:51.

A terrific sprint to the line between the final runners of the two Elphinstone teams brought some extra excitement to the race, as Clayton Jones of Juvenile team "Mod Squad Elphinstone" duelled with Junior Mixed "Elphinstone" anchor Tyler Carriere. Jones moved ahead by a hair at the finish line, both teams recording 1:10:32 and winning their respective categories. The Mod Squad's other members were Shaun Stephens-Whale (ran 2 legs) and Trevor Hatfull, while the Elphi crew was rounded out by Katrina Jones, Shane Morissey, and Jenna Nestman. In addition to their medals, the Elphinstone team members each received a $25 gift certificate from North Shore Athletics for being the first Mixed team to finish regardless of age group.

Seventh overall in 1:14:44 was another Phoenix Athletic Association club team, the "Phamous Pharts", winner of the Masters Mixed division. Next in that category, eighth overall and four minutes behind the "Pharts" were "The 4 Winds" from Halfmoon Bay in 1:18:43. (Maybe this was the "wind warning" the weather forecasters were advising.) Prudently staying well back from these two teams were "The Coasters" of Sechelt in 1:30:08 for third place in the Masters Mixed division.

First women's team to complete the 4x4 was a masters team, "St. Mary's Hospital" in 1:24:47 (Ingrid Turner, Sigrid Petersen, P. McNeil, Shirley Bruce). Second in the masters women division was a Kajaks team from Richmond in 1:30:31, while "Moms on the Run" of Halfmoon Bay took third spot in 1:35:37.

First 2-person team in the 16 km event was "The A Team" of Angela Singbeil and Heather Wheatley, averaging just over seven and a half minutes per mile to finish in 1:18:53.

Dozens of terrific draw prizes were given away, including a heart rate monitor, 3-month gym memberships, sheepskin slippers, basket of athlete's health food goodies, his and hers Sporthill running tops, gift certificates from many local restaurants and stores, sports clothing and accessories, and many more, including a selection of toys for the 6-12 year old set. Grand individual draw prize was a night for 2 at a local B&B, won by Port Moody's Alex Seres (from the overall winning 4x4k team).
