Thanks to all participants, volunteers and sponsors in our Fifth Annual relay event! This year saw more schools and more
school teams participating than ever before. Weather was PERFECT! Story
below; see
some photos here.
Record Turn-out and New Course Record
October 3rd, 2004, Gibsons Landing — A bright Fall morning, with
perfect-for-running temperatures and no wind, greeted participants in the
fifth annual Specialty Subaru Fall Tune-Up Relay, held Sunday in Gibsons
Landing. Forty-two pre-registered teams plus a few more sign ups on race
day brought the total to 46 (180 individuals), the second-largest turnout
the event has ever seen. Volunteers from Arbutus Sounds Chorus, Elphinstone
Secondary, teachers and parents of participating elementary students all
helped to make race day run smoothly. At 9:30am the starter's horn blared
and 46 eager runners took off up Gower Point Road beside Dougall Park,
while their team-mates cheered and prepared for their turn.
In a class of their own, minutes ahead of everyone else, "Running'
Rebels" Stuart and Connor Richey of Roberts Creek took turns racing
around the 2km loop to speed through 4 laps in 32:59 (averaging 6:20 per
mile),
a new course record by nearly 2 minutes. The previous record for the 8k
relay distance, set in 2003 by 2-person "Team PIG", was
34:49. The 12-year-old Richey twins have raced this event every year since
its inception but until 2004, always as part of a 4-person team. For their outstanding
performance this year they were awarded gold medals and a couple of $25
gift certificates from the Run Inn. Next year, as 13-year-olds, they'll
have to enter the 4x4km division.
Second to finish in 39:26 was a family team with 3 adults and 1 child,
the "Old Potatoes and One Young Sprout" headed by local artist
Sa Boothroyd, who also donated 2 beautiful framed prints for draw prizes.
As first Family team they also won gold medals and Run Inn gift
certificates.
Competition heated up as the next three finishers crossed the line
within 10 seconds of each other, representing three different local
elementary schools. Cedar Grove's Team #4 (S. McAllister, A. Veale, J.
Beadle, O. Cantarutti—39:09) edged out Roberts Creek's "Team
Equilibrium" (S. Garmulewicz, N. Radford, C. Buchanan, K. Capron—39:15) and Langdale's Team #1 (D. Windsor, M. Moriarty, C.
Fyles,
I. Miller—39:19) to take gold, silver and bronze, respectively, in the
Youth category.
Not far behind were the 4th and 5th place Youth teams: Roberts Creek
Team #5 (39:33) and Langdale Team #2 (39:48).
A record total of 29 youth teams and 3 teacher teams took part this
year in the Specialty Subaru Elementary School Challenge, which offered
cash prizes towards sports equipment to the top three schools by
participation. For the fourth straight year, Langdale Elementary took top
honours, claiming the winners' trophy and $300 by entering 13 teams
totalling 34% of their enrolment for 2004. Roberts Creek Elementary, who
hasn't won since the inaugural relay, came back strong this year with 11
teams (15% of enrolment) to take the $200 prize, while first-time entrants
Cedar Grove Elementary put together seven teams (9% participation) to nab
the $100 prize. Honourable mention goes to another first-time entrant,
Gibsons Elementary, with three teams entered.
In the 4x4km race, the "Phoenix Phleet Pheet" of Coquitlam
returned to the event after a one year absence, this time as an open men's
team with original member Paul Tinari joining Alex Gibson, Jim Tempel and
Matt Sessions. Though several minutes slower than their 2002 winning time,
they still bested the rest of the field to take top spot in 1:03:38, along
with $100 worth of gift certificates from North Shore Athletics. Teammates "Phoenix Phleet Phemales" were led by masters athlete
extraordinaire Nancy Tinari, winner of the 2004 Timex BC Road Running
Series, to claim second overall and first in the Open Women's division in
1:09:21. One of three teams from Elphinstone Secondary, "Messieurs
Potato Head" (Shaun Stephens-Whale, Clayton Jones, James Pomfret and
Trevor Hatfull) followed in third place with a 1:10:55 clocking and first
place in the 15 and under category.
First all-masters team (40+) was "Up the Creek" (new B&B
in Roberts Creek) with co-owner Martin Prestage joined by running buddies
David Barnum, Lexa Pomfret and Tom Roberts to finish fourth overall in
1:17:03, just ahead of two more Elphi Junior Mixed teams: "Mikey
Likes It" (1:17:14) and "Kat's Kreatures" (1:17:58). Seventh overall,
the family "Team Troup" from Halfmoon Bay ran 1:19:16 for second
in Open Men.
The sole 2-person team in the longer distance was the "Howe Sound
Hustlers", Angela Singbeil and Paul Sheridan, taking turns to cover
the 16.7km (10.4mi) course in 1:25:49.
Winners in the Open Mixed division were the "Phoenix Phunny Pheet",
while the Masters Mixed gold was claimed by "Charman Creek
Lodge". Gold sponsor Sunshine Coast Credit Union entered an Open
Women's team who finished second in their division.
For full results see below.
Following the run, participants and volunteers checked to see if their
ticket was drawn to win one of the 73 terrific prizes donated by
sponsoring businesses. One third of the items were provided by gold-level
sponsor Trail Bay Source for Sports.
Thanks to the very generous cash contribution by title sponsor
Specialty Subaru, who have been supporting this event since the very
beginning, net proceeds totalling nearly $3,000 will be donated to the
Elphinstone Track & Field Facility Fund, Sunshine Coast Athletics (for
high school athletics teams on the Sunshine Coast) and Arbutus Sounds
Chorus.
Next running event on the Sunshine Coast is coming up Sunday October
17th in Garden Bay: the Youth Violence Awareness Run 9k organized by Mokie
Barabash-Burnham. Click here for details and
entry form or call Mokie at 604-885-4626.
Next year's Specialty Subaru Fall Tune-Up Relay will be October 2nd,
2005.
