Area information
The Sunshine Coast is located north of
Vancouver, BC, just 40 minutes by ferry and a world away. Sechelt,
"the Village between two waters", is about 30 minutes from the Langdale
ferry terminal. Porpoise Bay Provincial Park is
4 kilometres north of Sechelt. The park is characterized by second-growth
forest, open grassy areas and sandy beaches.
Ferry Travellers
For those coming from
the Lower Mainland on race day, you will need to take the 7:20 am or 9:20
am ferry (the 9:20 is only suitable for the 5.4km race) from
Horseshoe Bay to Langdale.* The ride is approximately 40 minutes and the
fare is for the round trip (you don't pay on the way home).
*Check BC
Ferries website for latest information before travelling. Note:
credit cards and cash accepted at ferry terminal and on board, no Interac.
The ferry ride is very scenic
with views of Gambier Island and the coastal mountains. The ship (click
for image & info) is a large "C class" vessel with a
full service cafeteria, gift shop, snack bar. Capacity 362 vehicles, 1500
passengers and crew.
Do not miss the 9:20 sailing as the next one is 2 hours later! The
Langdale terminal is approximately 30 minutes drive from Porpoise Bay
Provincial Park.
Driving
directions:
Upon leaving the ferry terminal, follow the main traffic
flow up the big hill and into Upper Gibsons. Turn right onto the
Highway at the first light and follow the signs to Sechelt. Once in
Sechelt, turn right onto Wharf Road (traffic light) after passing the
hospital and Petro Can, then right again onto East Porpoise Bay Road at the
4-way stop sign. Follow this road (becomes Sechelt Inlet Road) 4km to the park
entrance.
Head straight down to the parking lots in front of the beach area. Watch
for runners crossing (obey marshals) if arriving after 10:15am.
Stay awhile!
On the other hand, why not travel
on Saturday (for scheduled sailings see
BC
Ferries website) and stay overnight at a hotel or B&B? Your race morning will be much more
relaxed (and you can sleep longer!).
There's so much to see and do on the Sunshine Coast you'll want to arrive early and plan on staying for a while after the race,
too!
